Our History

Playmates Cottage was established over 35 years ago, inspired by the vision of the Chief Executive of Dubbo Base Hospital, who recognised the need for high-quality, reliable childcare for hospital staff and the local community. In 1985, Playmates Cottage proudly became the first childcare service outside a metropolitan area to operate on hospital grounds, supporting both healthcare workers and local families.

In 2010, plans for the redevelopment of the hospital revealed that Playmates Cottage was not included. Despite ongoing discussions with hospital administrators and numerous letters to politicians, the answer remained the same. Determined to protect this vital community service, families, staff and supporters came together to take action.

The “Save Playmates” campaign quickly gained momentum. With incredible support from local businesses, the wider community and local representatives, awareness grew through media coverage, fundraising efforts and a petition that gathered more than 10,000 signatures. This collective effort saw the matter reach NSW State Parliament.

Thanks to the unwavering commitment of our community, a positive outcome was achieved. Dubbo Regional Council generously offered land for a new centre, and the NSW Government funded the construction. After a long and passionate journey, Playmates Cottage proudly opened the doors to its new, state-of-the-art facility on 5 March 2018.

Today, Playmates Cottage remains community-based, community-owned and not-for-profit. Every decision we make is guided by what is best for our children, with all resources reinvested back into the centre.

We are incredibly proud of our history and the strength of the community that made it possible. We look forward to continuing this legacy for generations to come.
